
In a new treaty on global warming, the UN has outlined a general position against energy subsidies, saying that nations such as Russia and Iran — which pay out $40 billion and $37 billion in annual subsidies, respectively — do more harm than good.
Subsidies promoted by countries rich in fossil fuels encourage consumption, discourage efficiency and delay the transition to cleaner energy.
